Carlsbad Desal Plant

Carlsbad Desal Plant

Project Summary:
2012 - 2015
Kiewit undertook the design and construction of the nation's largest, most technologically advanced, and energy-efficient seawater desalination plant during this project. This comprehensive endeavor encompassed various components, ranging from the Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) facility with a pumping station and produced water storage to a 10-mile-long, 54-inch high-pressure welded steel conveyance pipeline. Kiewit also expertly managed the seamless integration of the 50-million-gallons-per-day (MGD) plant into the distribution system. This integration included nine jack and bore crossings, over 900 existing utility crossings, a 1,750-linear-foot tunnel, and 42 manways.

The project earned accolades, receiving the DBIA 2016 Design Build Project of the Year and ACEC 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards – Grand Award.

My Role
My role in this project involved assisting in the design, configuration, and installation of the network and computer systems. The network setup adhered to industry standards and included essential components such as an Internet Service Provider (ISP), router, Layer-3 switches, server, and wireless access points. In addition to providing remote support, I made regular visits to the project office, typically a few times a month, to offer on-site assistance and technical support.
